Tosa is a Faroese text-to-speech tool from Punktum.fo. You can type or paste Faroese text into it and have it read aloud using a Faroese AI-generated voice. It is the same voice that Punktum.fo uses to read its news articles aloud.
A particular advantage of Tosa is that the text-to-speech processing takes place directly on the user’s device. The necessary model runs locally in the browser, so the text is not sent to an external server in order to be converted into speech. This is beneficial from a data-privacy perspective.
The service is based on Faroese speech data and MMS-TTS (Massively Multilingual Speech Text-to-Speech) from Meta. MMS is a collection of text-to-speech models developed by Meta to make speech synthesis available in more than a thousand languages, including Faroese.
The service is free for personal use and is based on material licensed under CC BY-NC 4.0.
