Now it’s possible to use Faroese speech recognition directly on Windows computers! The program, called Dictus Sun, has been developed in a collaboration between the Talutøkni Foundation and the Danish company Dictus. The Centre for Language Technology has also provided consultation on linguistic matters for this project. This program allows you to write in Faroese with your voice, without using the keyboard.
With Dictus Sun, you can now write emails, documents, and social media posts just by saying what you want it to write. This has long been possible in other languages, but now it is possible in Faroese! The program is highly accurate, and it can write Faroese text immediately after you finish uttering a word or a sentence.
The launch event for the Faroese Dictus Sun was held at Smæran on Wednesday, August 28th. There, the Talutøkni Foundation and Dictus gave a demonstration of the program, and we learned how it can be used together with other assistive programs like IntoWords. There was also a discussion on how users can get the best results when using the program.
Donate Your Voice and Help Improve Faroese ASR
There is still a need for more voices to improve Faroese speech recognition. If you want to contribute to the development of Faroese language technology, you can donate your voice by visiting the Dictus website and reading some sentences aloud. The recordings will be used to improve Faroese speech recognition so that it can become even better and more accurate for everybody. The recordings collected by Dictus will later be handed over to the Centre for Language Technology for administration and free use so that everyone can benefit from this in the future.
