The Nordic Conference on Computational Linguistics NoDaLiDa was held in the Faroe Islands from May 22 to 24, 2023. The Faculty of Faroese Language and Literature at the University of the Faroe Islands organized the conference in collaboration with the board of NEALT – Northern European Association for Language Technology.
The NoDaLiDa conference takes place every other year and has a history of almost 50 years. The fact that the conference was held in the Faroe Islands this time is a clear indication that language technology is a serious topic on the agenda both at the University and in the broader Faroese society.
Approximately 180 researchers, computer scientists, linguists, and others working in the field of language technology registered for the conference. With the rapid development of language technology and, not least, artificial intelligence, both opportunities and challenges follow. International collaboration is crucial for the work on Faroese language technology, and that is one of the reasons there was an interest in bringing NoDaLiDa to the Faroe Islands. Representatives from companies in the Nordic countries working with language technology participated, and both Faroese and Nordic companies supported the conference.
Workshops took place at Sjóvinnuhúsið on the first day, May 22. The conference itself, with lectures and presentations, began at the Nordic House on the morning of May 23 and continued until the afternoon of May 24. Participation required registration. Djóni Nolsøe Joensen, Minister of Education, Youth, and Culture, opened the conference.
Nodalida2023 has its own website, which can be viewed here. In connection with the conference, Kringvarpið covered language technology on the news programme on May 22, 2023. Iben Nyholm Debess was invited to the television studio to discuss artificial intelligence and language technology. This segment of the news program, which was created by asking a chatbot how it should be set up, can be seen by clicking here.
