One of our own, Annika Simonsen, is graduating with a Master's in Language Technology from the University of Iceland on February 23rd. The thesis focused on testing the abilities of GPT-4, an advanced language model, with the Faroese language. By translating from Faroese to English, analysing sentiments, and classifying topics, the project explored how well GPT-4 understands Faroese. Additionally, the research included improving a machine translation model by using GPT-4’s translations along with human translations. This innovative approach aims to enhance how we use technology to support Faroese and other languages.
Following this achievement, Annika's journey continues into a PhD programme at the Computer Science department of the University of Iceland. This is part of the TrustLLM project (https://trustllm.eu/), funded by Horizon, which aims to develop large-scale European language models focusing on Germanic languages, including Faroese. The project's goal is to build reliable, sustainable, and open language models that improve how humans interact with machines, making technology more accessible and inclusive for various languages.
We wish Annika congratulation on this milestone and look forward to the innovative developments that will come from the TrustLLM project and beyond.
As Annika embarks on her PhD studies, we are delighted that she will continue to be affiliated with the Centre for Language Technology, where she will proceed to work on the Faroese MegaWord Corpus project.
